Firewall Software

Definition: "Firewall Software" is a client-side application (a program that is installed on the user's hard drive and running on a continuous basis) that can monitor both in-bound and out-bound Internet communications at the packet level. Internet traffic can be totally blocked or selectively filtered. Email monitoring capability is included with a number of products on the market as well as port monitoring, sensitive information protection and from changes in data and system files. More detailed tracking features are available with some publishers' products. Other firewalls focus on the hardware.

Its Relevance: These applications are designed to monitor, filter or block Internet communications on the client side and are better suited for home computer or home and business computer use; however, programs can provide effective protection. The cost is relatively inexpensive and tends to be customized.
