Definition: Information is raw data that has been processed into a meaningful word(s) or number(s). Words and values are created for a specific purpose. That is, decision making. Decision-making must be based upon the absolute best set of documentation and reports that can be gathered. Processed data used for decision making can be one line in length, a number or combination of numbers, a single screen or numerous pages. Unless the infrastructure is secure and robust, malicious users can gain access to compromised data and do harm.

Its Relevance Truly, without assuring every component of a data processing system and the accompanying network, decision making is precarious at best. A business or individual must be certain that every step possible has been taken to provide for the confidentiality, integrity and availability of its assets. Otherwise it is vulnerable.
