Steganography

Definition: Steganography is am extremely sophisticated way of hiding information within a digital object. One of the more spectacular applications is to hide a message within an image, such as a .jpg file, without being detection.

Any individual who isn’t aware that a secret message is stored within the image would only see a simple innocuous picture. The sender and receiver, however, would know that a concealed message is present and the receiver would be able to extract the hidden message. Other information can be hidden in sound files. One of the few defenses is to compare the original file with the file that contains a concealed message.

Its Relevance: There are very few effective means to block this surreptitious message concealing techniques. Infrastructure owners must take extra precautions to reduce vulnerabilities.
